HYPE-15. Andy Warhol was right.
From HYPE Magazine's Artist Profile, 5-31-95
Artist: Toby
From: San Francisco
Medium: Chalk Drawings
Toby is an outlaw...
he's on the run from the Canadian police. It seems that the Queen isn't
very fond of Toby's chalk drawings -- he landed in jail for his art
pieces in his hometown of British Columbia, Canada. That's why, Toby
says, he moved to San Francisco. "I was tired of being harassed."
So far, Toby's had
much better luck with the Queens in San Francisco. People are getting
into and getting off on his artwork on the walls of the infamous South
of Market bar, My Place and in the Castro's butch Castro Station.
Look, but don't touch!
These intricate,
rich, fantastic drawings are done in pastel chalks and covered with
a thin layer of cellophane which is strategically stapled in place.
"They were getting damaged real easily before I started covering
them... it works really well. People can even have these in their homes.
As long as you keep them covered they will last forever."
